5 Practical Tips for Modeling AAC Usage Every Day
For many non-verbal individuals, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a powerful tool for expressing thoughts, needs, and feelings. But even the best AAC app or device is only as effective as the support system around it. One of the most impactful ways to help AAC users build confidence and language skills is through modeling—using the AAC system yourself, right alongside them.
If you’re new to AAC or just looking for ways to boost communication at home, school, or out in the community, these five tips will help you get started.
1. Use AAC Naturally Throughout the Day
AAC isn’t just for “therapy time.” The more you use it in everyday routines, the more opportunities the communicator has to see language in action. Try using AAC during:
Meals (“Do you want more?” “Yummy!”)
Playtime (“Let’s build!” “Your turn!”)
Outings (“Look, a dog!” “Let’s go to the park.”)
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s exposure and consistency.
2. Speak and Tap—Don’t Just Point
When you use the AAC app, say the words out loud as you select them. This helps connect spoken language with symbols and reinforces learning.
Example:
Tap “Let’s go outside” on SpeakAnyWay, and say, “Let’s go outside!” as you do it. Over time, this helps build understanding and confidence for the communicator.
3. Don’t Worry About Perfection
It’s totally normal to stumble or not find the exact word you want. Modeling is about showing how to use the tool, not about getting every word “right.” If you get stuck, try saying, “Let’s find that word together,” or model how to look for it in the app. Mistakes are part of the learning process!
4. Model More Than Just Requests
AAC isn’t only for asking for things. Use it to comment, greet, share feelings, or just chat. This helps build a richer vocabulary and shows that communication is about more than just needs.
“That’s funny!”
“I feel happy.”
“Good morning!”
The more variety you model, the more options the communicator will feel comfortable using.
5. Involve Everyone
The best AAC support happens when everyone gets involved—siblings, grandparents, teachers, friends. The more people who use AAC with the communicator, the more natural and accepted it becomes.
Encourage others to join in, even if they’re new to AAC. A supportive environment makes a huge difference.
Final Thoughts
Modeling AAC might feel awkward at first, but every attempt counts. The more you use the app in daily life, the more opportunities you create for the communicator to learn, grow, and connect.
Remember: progress takes time, and every bit of modeling helps. You’re building a bridge to communication—one tap, one word, one moment at a time.
